If you're affiliated with the blogosphere in any way, shape or form, then you have probably had the word 'hygge' thrown in your face at some point over the last couple of months. The first time I found out about this magical word, I threw my hands in the air and screamed, "YES! THIS IS AMAZING!" even though I'm sure most Danish people think that may be a bit of an overreaction.
So, when the lovely people at Penguin Books sent over a copy of The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking*, I was so excited to read this little instruction manual that would give me the key to unlocking this magical feeling.
If you don't know, Hygge is the Danish art of 'cosiness'. It is a feeling of warmth, friendliness and the home. As somebody who has suffered from SAD for many years, this year I have been determined not to let the dark nights and cold weather get to me. Hygge is the perfect way to combat the depression and negativity that often arrives in the Winter months.
I love the fact that the book in itself is Hygge embodied. Curling up in a cosy blanket with a hot water bottle and hot chocolate really made my evenings so relaxing and filled with happiness. Wiking's writing style is very friendly, easy-going and informative and I loved learning not just about this new phenomenon, but about the Danish culture (especially as I'll be visiting Copenhagen next month!).
I would 100% recommend this book for anyone looking to embrace the dark months more! It's such a wonderful read and has definitely allowed me to gain even more ideas about how to bring Hygge into my life. I'm sure you're sick of the word already, but I can assure you, you'll be hearing it a lot more!
